Spring Training 2008
Oakridge, TN
March 23-30
Spring Training is mandatory for all rowers.We thank
parents for recognizing the importance and value of the Spring Training
by having your child participate. Please help
us by reinforcing with your child that Spring Training should be
fun, productive and incident free.
Itinerary
Sunday, March 23
-10:00 AM All rowers meet at Loyola Academy and depart for Oak Ridge.
Rowers should eat before they leave the house.
We will stop on the way down for bathroom breaks and food breaks for
those that are hungry.
Rowers can bring food and beverages with them on the bus.
Rowers will clean the bus before getting off in Oak Ridge and other destination
points.
Rowers will
not be able to make long distance outgoing calls from their rooms.
We recommend that rowers be given phone cards, cell
phones, or change to make calls from the pay phone.
Rowers will sleep 5 to a room.
Rowers will be responsible for any damage to hotel property.
We will make every attempt to place the rowers in non-smoking rooms; however,
we cannot guarantee this will happen.
Monday, March 24 through early Sunday, March 30
Spring training
begins and continues through Saturday, March 29.
Rowers will be provided
all meals throughout spring training. Rowers are expected to
eat with
the team.
Rowers
are not
to spend
their
money
on fast food in lieu
of the meals provided.
An evening activity (bowling) will be planned
for Wednesday evening.
Rowers should have spending money
for this
activity.
Rowers are discouraged from bringing
valuables such as iPods, etc. Rowers
are encouraged to bring cards, board
games, or books for times when they
are at
the hotel between practices.
Any rower
not riding home on the bus must notify Joe Alagna (Home:847-255-6858, Cell: 312-231-3485, joe@leaderspartners.com) before leaving the regatta area. All boats and equipment will be
on the trailer
before
any rower leaves the regatta site.
A rower will not be permitted to ride
with an adult other than their parent/guardian
unless we have the
direct permission
of the rower’s
parent.
-midnight-1:00am (est.) Rowers will
arrive at Loyola Academy(late Saturday- early Sunday)
Rowers will
call their parents from the bus when we are heading into downtown
Chicago.
Please help the chaperones by having made arrangements prior to your rower's arrival.
Please give your child a number where you can be reached
should we get in early or are delayed.
Other general
information
-
Any medication
should be placed in a plastic bag with instructions and
given to Joe Alagna
when the rower checks in at the bus on April 8.
-
All rowers
should pack aspirin or Advil, tape or Band-Aids for their hands
or
heels.
Some rowers will need to be taped on a daily basis.
-
There are
limited laundry facilities in Oak Ridge. Rowers should pack for
twice daily practices
(socks, t-shirts, shorts, sweats, etc) and comfortable
clothing for the evening.
-
Every
novice rower
should have
one dozen
cheap tube
socks.
-
Average
temperatures for the Knoxville area (includes Oak Ridge) is a low
of 44 F and a high of 70F. Pack jackets, sweatshirts, and pants.
These pants should be close-fitting, warm, breathable and dry easily
(underarmor)
-
Rowers
should bring pocket money; rowers should leave valuables at home.
LARA
is not responsible
for lost money or valuables.
Last year
there were field trips
to the local Wal-Mart and other local
retail spots
in the shopping complex surrounding
the hotel.
The rowers will want to check out
the “Blue Light Specials” again
this year.

Rowers
will have
a curfew;
they are
expected to
abide by
it. The
rowers will
be physically
tired from
the practices. They do need their sleep.

Drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, pocketknives, inappropriate
literature and gadgets
that can inflict harm on others are not permitted
and will
be confiscated.
-
“Hazing” type
activities or actions that hurt a rower or the reputation of Loyola
Academy will not be tolerated. Please review with your rower the Rowers
Code of Conduct and the Loyola Academy Athletic
Code before
the trip.

Finally,
the chaperones are volunteers and deserve each rower’s
respect. A rower may not agree
with
everything
a chaperone asks or requests,
but
we do expect the rower to respond
or do as asked.

sunglasses, Oakley (or the like). Might want to consider the strap that connects
to the glasses to keep them from falling into the water

bottles are popular with the rowers

at least 1 waterproof one

by parents)
